How to become a lifeguard

So you’re interested in becoming a lifeguard – that’s great news! Being a lifeguard is a very challenging but rewarding job, and you are nearly always the envy of your friends and family as you spend your work hours on some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

The Australian Lifeguard Service employs over 500 lifeguards every year in roles from entry level lifeguard through to lifeguard supervisor. A number of our lifeguards are full time employees – lifeguarding all year round – and some are casual or contract lifeguards – employed during busier holiday periods such as the Christmas holidays.

As part of a world-leading organisation, our lifeguards must demonstrate high levels of fitness, excellent rescue and people skills, and great professionalism. All lifeguards will be over 16 years of age and have as a minimum the following qualifications:

  • Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue)
  • Senior First Aid
  • Advanced Resuscitation Techniques
  • Basic Beach Management
  • Spinal Management

Click here for more information on lifeguard qualifications.

Lifeguards must also be prepared to uphold the values of the ALS and present a professional, helpful and courteous front to the public.

Whichever lifeguard career you are looking for there are a number of steps you will need to take in order to join the Australian Lifeguard Service. See the Recruitment Process page for more information or click here.
