International exchanges

The Australian Lifeguard Service is a division of Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA). SLSA is the only beach based Lifeguard Service in Australia that is a member of the International Lifesaving Federation (ILS). As a result the ALS has a strong and extensive partnership with many nations for the employment of Lifeguards in Australia.

The Australian Lifeguard Service has a number of exchange programs established with fellow Lifeguard Services. These vary throughout the states but include exchanges with the following countries:

  • United Kingdom
  • New Zealand
  • Denmark
  • Greece
  • Asia Pacific Region
  • USA

Some exchanges are provided on an annual basis, others as the need or opportunity arises. Lifeguard exchanges are managed through the state offices of the ALS and opportunities (for Australian ALS Lifeguards) are promoted through the Lifeguard Network.

If you’re a lifeguard (Australian or International) and you are interested in lifeguard exchanges you should join the Lifeguard Network by visiting lifeguardnetwork.com.au – it’s free. The Lifeguard Opportunities section will provide information on the latest lifeguard exchanges and other exciting opportunities.

Note: International lifeguards will need to contact their prospective national lifeguard office for information on current exchanges including how to apply.

International lifeguards wishing to work as a lifeguard in Australia will need to provide evidence of their own country’s lifeguard certificates in accordance with the ILS standard for lifeguard equivalency. Comprehensive proficiencies will need to be completed to Australian standards before commencement of employment. You may also be required to attain further awards as required by the ALS and you will be made aware of these on application. For more information on international lifeguard equivalencies see the International Lifeguards page or click here.

What is the Lifeguard Network?

The network is a specifically designed for professional beach and ocean lifeguards across the country. Its aim is to share information across the industry making the job of lifeguards easier and to provide the lifeguard industry with information and opportunities that will benefit lifeguards and public safety in general.
