The Australian Lifeguard Service Queensland employs over 300 lifeguards in roles from entry-level lifeguards through to lifeguard supervisors. Lifeguards are employed in a casual, permanent part-time and full-time capacity. Please refer to the following information for what is required to become a lifeguard in Australia’s leading lifeguard service.
OCEAN LIFEGUARD – QUALIFICATIONS AND MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

To be part of a world-class organisation, our lifeguards must be 18 years or over (Wide Bay and Mackay Region is 17) and demonstrate high levels of fitness, excellent rescue and people skills, and hold, and hold or be able to hold the following qualifications:
- Surf Life Saving Bronze Medallion/Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue)
- HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid
- HLTAID015 – Provide Advanced Resuscitation Techniques
- Current Motor Car Drivers Licence (Provisional or higher)
- Queensland PWC licence
- Hold or be able to obtain a Queensland Working with Children Blue Card
OCEAN LIFEGUARD – FITNESS COMPONENT

Wide Bay Capricorn, Sunshine Coast and South East Queensland at all times be capable of completing a 800 metre pool swim (completed in a pool no smaller than 25 metres in length) in under 14 minutes.
North QLD, Townsville, Mackay at all times be capable of completing a 400 metre pool swim in under 7 minutes 30 seconds and swimming for a further 600 metres untimed.
A lifeguard must complete a mission in less than 28 minutes on an ocean course which involves:
- a 600m swim,
- 800m run,
- 600m rescue board paddle and
- a second 800m run.
Ocean lifeguards must also complete:
- a 100m rescue tube rescue of a patient 100m out to sea and return and
- a 200m board rescue of a patient out at sea and return.
LAGOON LIFEGUARD – QUALIFICATIONS AND MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
